The Second Battle of Bull Run Essay Example For Students

The Second Battle of Bull Run Essay The year is 1862, during the Civil War. My name is Jack Taurance and I am eighteen years old. I am a soldier that has to fight in the 2nd Battle of Bull Run. The battle is going to take place in my hometown of Manassas, Virginia. I cannot wait. It is going to be so great I have heard that the 1st Battle of Bull Run was hell, but this one wont be. Itll be great because Im in it and I am fighting for my country and the people of Virginia. I am proud to be a part of the Confederate Army. We will write a custom essay on The Second Battle of Bull Run specifically for you for only $16.38 $13.9/page Order now August 27, 1862: Today is the first day of the battle. Im excited beyond imagination; I cannot express my feelings right now. Robert E. Lee, the general of the Confederate Army, has told us to get in our fighting positions. I am next to older men that have fought in other battles, and they tell me not to be so excited for war is a terrible thing. Seeing as this is so new to me I shrug off their words of wisdom and continue with my merry thoughts. The men next to me tell me I need to listen to commands and stay focused at all times, or I will loose my life. We began to march towards the Union Army. On the way, I heard loud explosions all around me; the Union Army was using cannons and mines to defend themselves. The men around me began to shoot their riffles, so I did the same. There was yelling and firing all around, it seemed as though we were surrounded. The noise was so intense I felt it throughout my body. We were in the war; it was nothing as I expected. There was death all arou nd me. I dont think I have ever been more scared in my life. I was not mentally prepared to see what I saw nor was I physically prepared to do what was expected of me. Still I stayed brave, I didnt let any of my emotions pour through, for if I did I would never have been able to continue. August 28-30, 1862: The second and third days of this war were complete hell. There was so much action during theses days. I couldnt believe it!! There was more blood, guts and body less appendages just lying around than I could have ever imagined. Seeing all this made me hope that my blood would never be mixed with sea of nameless faces that was apparently growing. The fighting was so intense and there was so much pressure I just couldnt handle it. There were times when we would be running towards the Union Army and people would be dropping like flies, all of them were dead. It is my hope that they died instantly and not from being trampled over from all of us. Sometimes I would fall because I thought I was shot, but it turned out that I would just hear the noise and become so shocked that I would become paralyzed with fear, and no longer be able to move. Because of this reaction I ended up with cuts and bruises all over me, I cant explain how awful this felt I wanted to die each mi nute. The worst feeling was when I shot and killed another human being, no different from me. Seeing another person die because of me was dreadful. Soon after, though, it became second nature to me; killing to survive. I killed many men. Our task for the war, given by General Robert E. Lee, was to regain almost all of Virginia. We had completed our mission successfully, the South had won. .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd , .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .postImageUrl , .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd , .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd:hover , .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd:visited , .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd:active { border:0!important; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd:active , .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u7fca87f20b4e43b4d71888663f1240bd:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Maude Gould and Ann Lahiff EssayThis is the worst thing I have ever experienced in my life. May God forgive us all. Bibliography:

The eNotes Blog A Very Bad Bard,Indeed

A Very Bad Bard,Indeed William Shakespeareplaywright, poet ruthless tax evader? So says a new research paper to be presented next month by  academics Dr Jayne Archer, Professor Richard Marggraf Turley and Professor Howard Thomas of  Aberystwyth University, Wales. These three have exposed the Bard for offenses he committed more than four hundred years agothose of hoarding grain during a food shortage and evading taxes. For these crimes Shakespeare was fined in 1598 and threatened with jail time. Naughty, naughty Shakes Since the records clearly prove these facts to be true, it seems impossible that Wills crimes could have been kept a secret for so long. As it turns out, though, these were never actually hidden from the academic community. Rather, it seems that scholars downplayed this information because they cannot countenance the idea of a creative genius also being motivated by self-interest, according to the Sunday Times. But in doing so, the Aberystwyth researchers argue, critics also ignore a large influence on Shakespeares work. Take the play Coriolanus, for instance, a fiercely political tragedy that finds conflict in the juxtaposition of rich and poor. Art imitates life so greatly that the plot actually centers around a famine exploited by the rich, who drive up the price of grain to be sold to the poorprecisely what Shakespeare himself partook in. Since it was written around 1607, the same time of the Warwickshire food riots (where Shakes owned a considerate amount of land), some now argue that Coriolanus  came out of the playwrights desire to assuage some of his guilt for hoarding grain and exploiting famine. While nobody can prove that for certain, at the end of the day we can walk away having learnt of a new side to Shakespeares persona, that of the ruthless businessman who did all he could to avoid taxes, maximise profits at others expense, and exploit the vulnerablewhile also writing plays about their plight to entertain them, says Dr. Archer. â€Å"They ne’er cared for us yet: suffer us to famish, and their store-houses crammed with grain† (Coriolanus, Act I, scene i). King Lear  is another work that features a similar focus, continues Archer, as there is a very subtle depiction of how dividing up land also involves impacts on the distribution of food. Examining his works in this new light, it seems clear that Shakespeare had more practical, earthly matters on the mind than we normally credit (or discredit) him with. In so far that it might actually affect the reading of his plays, was the scholarly community right to keep this information hushed for so long? Does it change the way you think of William Shakespeare?

This is the strategy use by many Chinese companies. It priced its products very much than its Western counterparts and it is making a head way for a quite number of computer products. 3. Profit Maximization - In economics, profit maximization is the process by which a firm determines the price and output level that returns the greatest profit.. Hence, based on the above concept. The strategy requires the price combinations that would yield the highest profit. Hence, a company can use this to have higher profits. Knowledge Management Assignment Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 750 words - 3

Knowledge Management - Assignment Example nology may come along with challenges such as handling information overload, verifying and locating online expects, efficient knowledge mining approaches, reliability and security issues, filtering knowledge, and managing conflicts whenever many experts are involved. Traditional expert systems were designed for standalone computers. The challenge in this sense is that, many shells do not support the interoperability and openness needed for deploying expert systems over an extensive network. In addition, the internet was originally visualized as a document sharing infrastructure ad any effort to use it for sharing or distributing expert systems must manage all he difficulties. A number of web-based expert tools are easily accessible, but no formal assessment and comparison of diverse ones has been carried out (Hayes-Roth 13). If I were a management consultant, I would recommend the domain-specific knowledge-based expert systems technology to my clients. This is for the reason that it is a valuable resource through which knowledge is gained after some time of experience with a given problem. Most importantly, the expertise is never lost in an organization, rather transferred to other employees through training. Neural network technology has been demonstrated as a useful tool for modeling compound non linear relationships that have hidden data, offering superior prediction powers than traditional statistical techniques can do. This technology can perform tasks that cannot be performed by a linear program. When one of the key elements of a neural network stops working, it can continue without any inconveniences due to its parallel nature. In fact it learns without necessarily being reprogrammed. Further, it can b implemented in an application without many complications because researchers do not need a superior mathematical background, rather a few experiments and expenses. Finally, it is possible to include new outputs and inputs to the database to obtain a new

Suggestions for marketing strategies to a newly opened delicatessen Essay

Suggestions for marketing strategies to a newly opened delicatessen - Essay Example Marketing deli products in an exclusively village setting would require the delicatessen to focus attention on the consumer demographics such as incomes, ages and preferences. These factors would have a much greater impact on the delicatessen’s decision to locate in a village. Thus the primary and immediate assumption is that there are no other deli shops in the village or the existing ones aren’t so well geared to meeting the demand for deli products. Marketing strategies range from those which advocate market domination to those of Porter’s Generic Strategies; from innovation strategies to growth strategies that depend on integration related synergies; and from strategic archetypal models to warfare marketing strategies (Kotler, 1991). Market domination strategies are based on the understanding that any marketing strategy must have as its core objective the domination of the market. In other words the firm seeks to lead, challenge, simply follow or develop a niche market. There are three types of market dominance strategy. The price leader who sets the price for the rest of the market or industry must have a set of predetermining characteristics such as the ability to set the market ruling price at its will so that other competitors would have no alternative but to follow him. A delicatessen in a village is less likely to benefit from this strategy unless the village is already being served by some competitors who sell an approximate range of delicacies. Similarly the other two types of the market dominance strategy, the quantity leadership or challenger, are of little or no significance to the delicatessen in the village. This paper would thus focus on a hybrid marketing strategy that would include some of the features of the above marketing strategies in addition to the writer’s own analytical perspectives (www.ama.org). In a village of approximately 9,000 people a substantial policy of product differentiation is

Importance of Financial Management

Importance of Financial Management INTRODUCTION The modern thinking in financial management accords a far greater importances to the management decisions and making policy. Today financial managers occupy key positions in top management areas and play dynamic role in solving complex management problems. The main object ive of accounting is to provide the necessary information, which is useful for the person within the organization i.e.; owners, management, employees and also outside the organization i.e.; investors, creditors, government, consumers, etc. Financial accounting is concerned with record keeping directed towards the preparation of income statement and financial position statement. It provides information regarding profit and loss of the enterprise and also its financial position as on that particular date. This information is helpful to management to control the major functions of the business i.e.; finance, administration, production and marketing, but details regarding operating efficiency to their lacking financial statements are mainly concerned with the managements interest in future of the organization. Thus the financial performance valuation involves the determination of the companys ability In mobilizing the funds required for the business and utilizing the funds in the business. Therefore, the financial performance is concerned with the appraisal of the following: Capital formation Capital structure Profitability and profit allocation Working capital and liquidity management FINANCIAL ANALYS Financial analysis is the process of determining the significant operating and financial characteristics of a firm from its accounting and its financial statements. The goal of such analysis is to determine the efficiency and performance of the firms management, reflected in the financial records and reports. This analysis will help us to measure firms liquidity, profitability and other indications that determine whether the business is conducted in a rational way or not. METHODS OF FINANCIAL ANALYSIS: There are 7 methods of financial analysis. Such are: Comparative statement Comparative income statement Comparative balance sheet Common-size statement Trend analysis Fund-flow analysis Cash-flow analysis Ratio analysis Cost-volume profit analysis RATIO ANALYSIS: Financial statement plays a decisive role in setting the frame work of managerial decisions for the financial statements viz; income statement and balance statement are prepared to help the management in taking decisions. The Ratio analysis is the most power tool of financial analysis. Meaning: A ratio is simple arithmetical expression of the relationship of one member to another. Accounting ratios are relationships expressed in mathematical terms between figures which are connected with each other in some manner. Ratio analysis shows inter-relationship between the different items in the data. Current ratio: Current ratio = Current assets / Current liabilities The current ratio is calculated by dividing the current assets by the current liabilities. Current assets include cash and those assets which can be converted into cash within year such as inventories, sundry debtors, marketable securities, loans and advances and prepaid expenses. Current liabilities are obligations maturing within a year, including creditors, bills payable, accrued expenses, bank overdraft, income tax liability, loans and advances and provisions. The companys liquidity position was very low in the initial years where as it is very high in the later years. Quick (or) Acid test ratio: Quick ratio = (Current assets Inventory) / Current liabilities The ratio is really at the rate of current ratio and is found out by dividing the total current liabilities. From the analysis, it can be interpreted that the companys liquidity position to pay for current liability is high. This result is higher interest cost on networking capital which affects the profitability of the firm. Debtors days: Debtors days = (Debtors / sales) * 365 The liquidity position of the firm depends on the quality of the debtors to the great extent. This resulted in higher balance in debtors for which company had to pay more interest charges which affected profitability of the company. This can be improved 3 times better as observed in the ratios of well doing firms. This will result in big reduction in interest charges as well as increase in profits. This possible only through better debtors management and optimum credit policy of the firm. Creditor days: Creditor days = (Creditor / Cost of goods sold ) * 365 This ratio is a variation of the credit ratio and gives similar indications. It measures the portion of the firms assets that are financed by creditors. A very high ratio indicates a greater risk to creditors as also to the share holders under adverse business conditions. On the other hand , a low ratio is for the creditors in extending credit. Net income ratio: Net income ratio = (Net profit / sales) *100 This ratio measures the rate of the net profit earned on sales. It establishes a relationship between net profit and sales in overall measure of the firms ability to turn pound of sales into net profit, this ratio also indicate the firms capacity to withstand adverse economic conditions. Gross income ratio: Gross income ratio = (Gross profit / Sales) *100 The gross profit has been arrived by adding the closing stock and subtracting the materials, excise duty, wages and other manufacturing expenses to sales. This ratio reflects the efficiency with which management produces each unit of the product. When the gross margin in subtracted from 100% we get the ratio of cost of goods to sale. Return on equity: Return on equity = Net income / Share holders equity The amount of net incomereturnedas a percentageof shareholders equity.Return on equitymeasures a corporations profitabilityby revealing how muchprofit acompany generateswith the money shareholders have invested. Net income is for the full fiscal year (before dividends paid to common stock holders but after dividends to preferred stock.) Shareholders equity does not include preferredshares. Cost of sales to sales ratio: Cost of sales to sales ratio = Cost of sales / Total sales Through the manufacturing expenses percentage of company is less than the industry average the Cost of sales is slightly more than the industry. This can be, because of more depreciation charges or difference in excise duty. Therefore company has to produce goods by effective utilization of foxed assets to bring down the depreciation cost of sales. Stock turnover days: Stock turnover days = sales / inventory The higher the stock turnover the better, because money is then tied up for less time in stocks. A quicker stock turnover also means that the firm gets to make its profit on the stock quicker, and so the firm should be more competitive. However, it will vary between industries and so it is important to compare within an industry. Return on net assets: RONA = net income / (Fixed assets + Networking capital) Here, Networking capital = Current assets Current liabilities. It is the useful measure the profitability of all financial resources invested in the firms assets. It evaluated the use of total funds without any regard to the sources of funds. Higher the ratio more effective is the firm is using the pool of funds. Sales to net assets employed: Sales to net assets employed = sales / net assets Here, Net assets = Fixed assets + Current assets Current liabilities. This ratio is also called the earning power of the firm and represents the return of the funds. It indicates how well management has used funds supplied by the creditors and owners. Higher the ratio better is the position of the firm and more efficient of the management in utilizing funds, entrusted to it. CONCLUSIONS In the overall of a business is to earn a satisfactory return on funds invested in it, consistent with maintaining a sound financial position. The position of the company according to ratio is satisfactory in the year 2008 2010. That means each year profit had been increased. Increasing the Gas Tax Would Cause an Improvement in the Environment Es

Increasing the Gas Tax Would Cause an Improvement in the Environment Many people all over the world are concerned about pollution. Gasoline use in automobiles is one of the major causes of pollution. When gasoline is used it releases carbon dioxide, methane and nitrogen oxide. These are gasses that contribute to the Greenhouse Effect. The Greenhouse Effect refers to the trapping of the sun's radiation and is also used synonymously with Global Warming (greenfuels.org). Governments are trying to come up with alternatives to gasoline to improve or at least not hurt our environment as much as gasoline does. There are things we can do to help out the environment. One suggestion is better public transportation systems. For example, Des Moines has a public bus system, but not very many people use it and the busses do not reach all parts of the city. As a result, many people drive themselves to work instead of taking the bus and saving gasoline. Another way to cut emissions of vehicles is a type of vehicle that uses an electric motor or a vehicle that uses both an electric and gasoline motor which cuts gasoline use. Also there are alternatives to gasoline that do not release as many harmful agents into the environment. Ethanol and hydrogen are two examples that are more environmentally friendly than gasoline. So, if the federal government were to increase the gas tax by one dollar per gallon, the public would have more incentive to buy the alternatives that are better for our environment than gasoline because of the much higher price. Also, with the increase in the gas tax the money would g ive funds toward the environment. With the increased gas tax, there will be extra money that will enable the government to do things fo... ...ne, most of which are much better for the environment than the gasoline that we are currently using. Even if people did not look for alternatives, there would be money to help out environmental issues. Different vehicles, hydrogen, and ethanol are things that have already been proven to be safer for the environment than gasoline. Just think, if we don't give up on looking for other alternatives what we may think of and we could save our environment in the process.
